Our Part in God's Story
The Bible tells the story that we are a part of. Not every detail of that story is meant to be reenacted. We are, rather, invited to join and continue the story. From God’s sovereign (un-hindered by time) perspective, the entire story is already completed, but we find ourselves between the Apostles and the End of the age, when all things are made new. We are to join God in faithfully ‘writing’ our portion of the story (I've been inspired by N.T. Wright's '4-Act' analogy, and Mark Strom's '5-Chapter' improvisation of it.) We learn to do this better by becoming familiar with both the plot and main character or the story. The fullness of both the plot and the main character of Bible’s story is none other than God, Who entered His own story as the Lord Jesus Christ, and continues in His Story as the Holy Spirit, the great ‘One who comes along-side.’ As He leads us into 'all truth,' He is the One who inspires our faithful ‘writing.’ He is the One who guides us in living out our part in His story. Do we trust Him to do this? Or must we insist on our faithless dependence on programmes, organisation, methodology, liturgy, tradition and human-effort?
